The Problem
UIC’s campus lacked reliable, quiet study spaces. Students often found areas overcrowded, noisy, or inefficiently used — especially during peak hours.
Key Insights
Our team conducted observational walks across campus and categorized the issues we encountered. We then asked: "How might we enhance the availability and comfort of shared campus spaces?"
Primary Research
30% of surveyed students reported that their usual study spots were consistently overcrowded.
We created a survey to ask UIC students where they prefer to study on campus and how they feel about their current study spaces. To encourage participation, we offered Hi-Chews as a small reward while approaching students around campus. Through this outreach, we discovered that many students shared similar concerns and preferences regarding their study environments.
Exploring Solutions
We ideated several concepts, including reservation systems, live capacity trackers, and modular furniture. We landed on a digital solution to centralize and simplify study space navigation.
